Kojagari Lakshmi Puja 2026: Sunday, 25 October
Dedicated countdowns and guides: Kojagari Lakshmi Puja 2026.
Kojagari Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday, 25 October 2026, Ashwin Purnima. The rest of India calls this full moon Sharad Purnima. Purnima runs from 11:55 AM on the 25th to 9:41 AM on the 26th. The moon rises around 4:21 PM in Kolkata and 5:00 PM in Delhi.
It looks different from the Diwali puja, because Kojagari is a night vigil. Nishita Kaal runs 10:56–11:46 PM in Kolkata (11:40 PM–12:31 AM in Delhi), and families stay awake through it. The name says why: Ko jagarti?, "who is awake?". Lakshmi is believed to move through the world that night and bless whoever she finds still watching. In Kolkata, put the kettle on around 10:30.
In Odisha the same full moon, Kumar Purnima, starts Gaja Lakshmi Puja. Dhenkanal and Kendrapara are known for it, with pandals that stay up for more than a week.
How the puja is performed
The details change from house to house, but the order mostly doesn't. First, the house gets a deep clean. Families treat that as part of the puja, because Lakshmi is believed not to enter a neglected home. Then a low chowki is covered with red cloth, and Lakshmi and Ganesha are placed on it, with Ganesha traditionally on her left.
A kalash, a metal pot of water topped with mango leaves and a coconut, goes beside them. Lamps are lit at the altar, the doorway and along the threshold. Offerings are usually batasha or other sugar sweets, puffed rice, coconut and seasonal fruit. Many families also place account books, cash or jewellery before the altar to be blessed. For family businesses, this is the night the new accounting year opens.
The aarti closes the puja. Many families then leave the diyas burning through the night, so nobody blows them out when the puja ends. Keep a tray of spare oil and wicks nearby before you start.
Lakshmi Puja 2026 FAQ
When is Lakshmi Puja 2026?
Diwali-night Lakshmi Puja is Sunday, 8 November 2026, with the muhurat 5:54–7:50 PM in New Delhi. Kojagari Lakshmi Puja (Bengal, Odisha, Assam) is Sunday, 25 October 2026. Varalakshmi Vratham in the South is next on Friday, 13 August 2027.
How many days are left until Lakshmi Puja 2026?
The countdown at the top of this page runs to the Diwali-night muhurat, 5:54 PM on Sunday, 8 November 2026. It counts to the start of the muhurat, not to midnight.
What is the Lakshmi Puja timing and muhurat?
5:54–7:50 PM on 8 November 2026, for New Delhi. That's the Vrishabha (fixed lagna) part of Pradosh Kaal, which runs about 5:31–8:09 PM. Pradosh Kaal moves with your local sunset, and the lagna with your city's longitude and latitude. In Mumbai or Kolkata the Delhi time can be half an hour or more off, so use the city calculator on this page.
Why is Lakshmi Puja performed after sunset?
Because the puja belongs to Pradosh Kaal, which starts at sunset, and Diwali falls on Amavasya, the darkest night of the month. Lighting lamps into that dark is the heart of it. Families prefer the narrower Vrishabha window because it's a fixed sign, and fixed signs are chosen for anything you want to stay.
What is the difference between Lakshmi Puja and Kojagari Lakshmi Puja?
They're on different nights. Diwali-night Lakshmi Puja is on Kartik Amavasya (new moon), 8 November 2026, as an evening puja. Kojagari is on Ashwin Purnima (full moon), 25 October 2026, as an all-night vigil, with Nishita at 10:56–11:46 PM in Kolkata. The name comes from "Ko jagarti?", "who is awake?", because Lakshmi is said to bless those still keeping watch.
Is Varalakshmi Vratham the same as Lakshmi Puja?
No. Varalakshmi Vratham falls on a Friday in Shravana, next on 13 August 2027, mainly in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Married women traditionally keep it. It has no link to Diwali and lands in July or August, a few months before that year's Diwali. Both honour Lakshmi, so search results mix them up.
Can Lakshmi Puja be performed at a different time?
Yes, and many families do. The Vrishabha window is a recommendation, not a deadline. Pradosh Kaal, about 5:31–8:09 PM in Delhi, is the usual outer limit. A time worked out for your own city matters more than the exact minute.
