When is Varalakshmi Vratham, and how is the date set?
Varalakshmi Vratham is kept on the Friday before Shravana Purnima. In 2027, Shravana Purnima is Tuesday, 17 August, the same full moon as Raksha Bandhan. The Friday before it is 13 August.
Friday is Lakshmi's day of the week, so this vratam is tied to a weekday as well as to the lunar month. That also means the gap between the vratam and the full moon changes every year.
Calendars can split when Shravana Purnima itself falls on a Friday. That happened in 2026. DrikPanchang listed Friday, 28 August, the Purnima day, while TTD's Tiruchanur temple held the vratam a week earlier, on 21 August. 2027 has no such clash, so plan for 13 August.
Why there are four windows instead of one
Most festivals on this site give you one muhurat. Varalakshmi Vratham gives you four.
A lagna is the zodiac sign rising in the east at a given moment. It changes about every two hours, so all twelve pass in a day. Four of them, Vrishabha, Simha, Vrishchika and Kumbha, count as sthira, fixed. Anything meant to last is timed to a fixed lagna, and a vratam for lasting prosperity fits that. So the day has four windows, one for each fixed sign as it rises.
You can pick any of them. The morning Simha window gets the puja done before the day fills up. The evening Kumbha window is the one most often called the best, because it overlaps Pradosh Kaal and Lakshmi is worshipped after sunset. If you're hosting, the evening slot also gives guests time to arrive after work.
How the vratam is kept
The kalash is the centre of it. Families don't treat the pot as a container for the goddess. They worship it as her. It's filled with water and rice, wrapped with new cloth at the neck, and topped with mango leaves and a coconut. Turmeric and kumkum give it a face, and families often dress it in a small saree and jewellery. It's set on a bed of rice and worshipped as Lakshmi herself.
The women recite the Lakshmi Ashtottara, her 108 names, and tie a vrata thread on the wrist. The offerings are South Indian festival staples: payasam, sundal, coconut and fruit. The day ends with the vratam katha read aloud to everyone gathered. Make the sundal the evening before. The morning will be busy enough.
In Karnataka it's called Varamahalakshmi Vrata. You'll also see Varalakshmi Vratam and Vratham. They're all the same festival.
